Switching direction keeps the same day, so you can flip between the two calendars to check a date.
About the Umm al-Qura calendar
The Hijri calendar counts years from the Hijrah, the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. It’s a lunar calendar: each month has 29 or 30 days, and the year has 354 or 355 days.
Umm al-Qura is the version used officially in Saudi Arabia. It fixes the length of each month in advance using astronomical calculations, so every date can be converted exactly.

Religious dates and moon sighting
In Saudi Arabia, the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and the Hajj season is confirmed by sighting the crescent moon. The announced date can differ from the Umm al-Qura calendar by a day, so check official announcements for these occasions.
