Two kinds of shareholder

You hold shares… Zakat
To sell (trading) 2.5% of the market value on your zakat date
For dividends, company pays zakat No further zakat on the shares, according to many contemporary scholars; dividends join your savings
For dividends, company doesn’t pay 2.5% of your share of the company’s zakatable assets

Example

A trader holding shares worth SAR 100,000 on their zakat date pays 2.5% = SAR 2,500.

Good to know

  • Scholars differ on some details, such as whether a trader may deduct the zakat the company already paid for each share.
  • Your total zakatable wealth (cash, gold, trade shares) must reach the nisab; see the zakat calculator and the gold nisab.

When in doubt, ask a scholar you trust about your situation.

Zakat on stocks calculator: common questions

How do I pay zakat on shares I trade?

Shares bought to sell are zakated like trade goods: 2.5% of their market value on your zakat date, once your zakatable wealth reaches the nisab and a Hijri year has passed.

Do I pay zakat on long-term shares in Saudi companies?

Saudi-listed companies pay zakat on their assets to ZATCA. Many contemporary scholars say no further zakat is due on the shares themselves; the dividends you receive join your savings for zakat.

What if the company doesn’t pay zakat?

Then zakat is due on your share of its zakatable assets, such as cash, receivables and stock, at 2.5%.
