The method in three steps

  1. Convert your date of birth to Hijri on the Umm al-Qura calendar.
  2. Find today’s Hijri date.
  3. Subtract the dates: days, then months, then years. If today’s day is smaller, borrow a month (29 or 30 days, depending on the previous month). If the month is smaller, borrow a year (12 months).

A worked example

Born on 1 January 2000, which is 24 Ramadan 1420 AH. On 29 September 2026, which is 18 Rabi al-Akhir 1448 AH:

Year Month Day
Today 1448 4 18
Birth 1420 9 24
  • 18 is smaller than 24, so borrow a month. Rabi al-Awwal 1448 had 29 days: 18 + 29 − 24 = 23 days, and the month becomes 3.
  • 3 is smaller than 9, so borrow a year: 3 + 12 − 9 = 6 months, and the year becomes 1447.
  • Years: 1447 − 1420 = 27 years.

Hijri age: 27 years, 6 months and 23 days. The Gregorian age is 26 years, 8 months and 28 days, or 9,768 days in total.

Why the Hijri age is higher

A Hijri year has 354 or 355 days; a Gregorian year has 365 or 366. More Hijri years fit into the same time, so your Hijri age gains about a year every 33 years.

The easy way

The Hijri age calculator does all this instantly: your age in Hijri and Gregorian, your Hijri date of birth, and your next Hijri birthday. For just your date of birth, read how to find your date of birth in Hijri.
