How it’s worked out

  • Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height, minus doors (about 1.9 m² each) and windows (about 1.5 m² each)
  • Add the ceiling if you’re painting it
  • Litres = area × coats ÷ coverage, plus 10%

Example

A 5 × 4 m room, 3 m high, with 1 door and 2 windows, 2 coats at 10 m² per litre:

  • Walls: 54 − 1.9 − 3 = 49.1 m²
  • Paint: 49.1 × 2 ÷ 10 × 1.1 ≈ 10.8 litres, about three 4-litre buckets

Paint calculator: common questions

How much does one litre of paint cover?

Usually about 8–12 m² per coat, depending on the paint and the wall. Check the number on the can.

How many coats do I need?

Two coats for most walls; one may do when repainting the same color, and three for a big color change.

Should I buy extra?

The calculator already adds 10%. Keep a little left over for touch-ups.
