The basic format
An amount in words usually sits between فقط (only) and لا غير (nothing more), so nothing can be added before or after it:
1,250.50 → فقط ألف ومائتان وخمسون ريالًا سعوديًا وخمسون هللة لا غير
Riyals come first, then halalas, joined by و.
How the number changes the word “riyal”
In Arabic, the counted noun changes with the number. This is where most mistakes happen.
| The number | Rule | Correct |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The noun, then واحد | ريال سعودي واحد |
| 2 | Dual | ريالان سعوديان |
| 3 to 10 | Plural | ثلاثة ريالات سعودية |
| 11 to 99 | Singular, accusative | أحد عشر ريالًا سعوديًا |
| 100, 1,000, 1,000,000… | Singular | مائة ريال سعودي |
| Ends in 3 to 10 (e.g. 105) | Plural | مائة وخمسة ريالات سعودية |
| Ends in 11 to 99 (e.g. 1,250) | Singular, accusative | ألف ومائتان وخمسون ريالًا سعوديًا |
The last part of the number decides the noun. For 1,250, the last part is 50, so the noun is ريالًا.
Thousands and millions
The same pattern applies to ألف (thousand) and مليون (million):
| Amount | In words |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | ألف |
| 2,000 | ألفان (ألفا before a noun) |
| 3,000 | ثلاثة آلاف |
| 11,000 | أحد عشر ألفًا (أحد عشر ألف before a noun) |
| 100,000 | مائة ألف |
| 5,000,000 | خمسة ملايين |
Two special cases
- 200 and 2,000 before a noun lose their final ن: مائتا ريال, ألفا ريال, مليونا ريال.
- 11 to 99 thousand before a noun lose the tanween: أحد عشر ألف ريال, not أحد عشر ألفًا ريال.
Numbers 3 to 10 take the opposite gender
ريال is masculine, so 3 to 10 take the ة: ثلاثة ريالات, عشرة ريالات. هللة is feminine, so the ة is dropped: ثلاث هللات, عشر هللات.
Common mistakes
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
| خمسة ريال | خمسة ريالات |
| خمسة عشر ريالات | خمسة عشر ريالًا |
| مائتان ريال | مائتا ريال |
| خمسة هللات | خمس هللات |
| واحد ريال | ريال واحد |
In English
English amounts follow a simpler pattern: One thousand two hundred and fifty Saudi riyals and fifty halalas only. Use the singular only for exactly one: one Saudi riyal, one halala.
The amount in words tool writes any amount in both languages with these rules applied. Always check the words against the figures before you sign.
